I cannot believe that St Francis do not fit horns to their boats so that the standard colreg sound signals can be used..... they don't.

On the boat we have a hailer and a horn for the alarm siren.

Is there anyway that we can fix up a simple press button horn utilising the hailer speaker?

I mean a simple way to broadcast a frequency to such a hailer that would allow it to sound as a horn just as it does when the radio controls it for fog signals every two minutes?

Is it normal for large sailing boats not to have a horn???

Pul, sorry but I can't see any advantage in having a manual input into a loud hailer to generate a tone. The regs are pretty specific about the timing between blasts and the length of the blast. It will drive you potty trying to track the time between signals.

Maplin can supply a chip to generate any tone you like, to feed it into the hailer amplifier.

Or if you want to sound like a destroyer

there are many sound signals besides the fog signals.
Fron those used in restricted channels to overtaking to a warning 5 blasts and more - all of these require manual long and short blasts.

Thanks for the link to the chip.

when you next visit get one of these
