Noise (sorry, they call it "nosie") level is taken at 7 metres distance. And they don't say which scale, too.

2.5 kw is a lot from a suitcase genny. My baby Honda is only 1200 w for roughly the same size and dimensions.

Still, it is pure sine wave, so shouldn't b*gger the electronics, but I'd be inclined to run the output through an online UPS to take care of any fluctuations.

Price looks a bit expensive even for the quality end of the market, but a lot more than some B&Q type things.

All the Hondas are tested at 7m too (52db). I thought £399 was very cheap compared to over £1000 for a Honda. I'm not sure how noisy (or nosie!) 58db is compared to 52db (yes I know it's louder /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif)

I've also seen some Pro-Gen generators in PBO but can't find a website for them. Anyone heard of them?

Putting it into perspective

Situation ~ db level
immediate soft tissue damage ~ approx. 185db
threshold of pain ~ 134db
hearing damage during short-term effect ~ approx. 120db
jet engine, 100 m distant ~ 110–140db
jack hammer, 1 m distant / discotheque ~ approx. 100db
hearing damage during long-term effect ~ approx. 90db
major road, 10 m distant ~ 80–90db
passenger car, 10 m distant ~ 60–80db
TV set at home level, 1 m distant ~ approx. 60db
normal talking, 1 m distant ~ 40–60db
very calm room ~ 20–30db
leaves noise, calm breathing ~ 10db
auditory threshold at 2 kHz ~ 0db

I have a Kipor 3000ti and contrary to popular belief it is almost as quiet as the Honda 2.0i, infact running at the same load there was hardly any noticable difference in noise level between the two units. (the chap who owned the Honda was a little annoyed when he realised he had paid 3 time more for his Honda than I did for the (more powerful) Kipor)

One thing I often do to quieten it even more is shove a 4' length of Eberspacher exhaust over the exhaust of the genny. This reduces the noise dramatically (even quieter than a Honda?). It seems to me most of the noise as actually from the exhaust not from the engine or alternator.
Before anyone starts on about exhaust back pressures etc etc, this has not had any noticable effect on the engine or fuel consumption so far after many hours of running.

The small suitcase type Kipor are still available in europe - seems Honda UK cannot stop Kipor selling them there. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
