I've just been replacing some window frames using 12mm marine ply. I now need to paint them black (before securing them in place).

Epoxy primer followed by 2 pack polyurethane.

And, er, really dumb question, how should I prepare the surface? This stuff is £30 a tin!
Is there a cheaper option? Without too much compromise? The surface is marine ply and will be regularly exposed to UK sun and rain, but not actually immersed in water.
