Any recommendations ? Me and her are considering buying a sailing boat suitable for UK/cross channel cruising. We both have very little sailing experience but we have spent plenty of time on our 21' diesel boat in solent area, pottering about /fishing etc. Budget is low - around 5k. We would look for something between 24-26' with diesel inboard, 2 to 4 berth, stable and easy to sail. References to previous posts would also be appreciated.

You'll be lucky to find anything that size within your budget. If you do it may need quite a bit of work/money to sort out.

My recommendation would be to look slightly smaller, at a Hurley 22. They often come up for sale and are a super little boat capable of crossing the Atlantic. A Corribee is also a good sea boat (ask Dame Ellen) but very cramped below.

Very little choice for that kind of money, I don't know if you have factored in mooring costs, replace and repairing gear etc but this boat looks good:

There's an Elizabethan 23 here , and if you look around you may see a tatty 29 for under £8k, but they usually go for nearer £10k. For £5k and this sort of size, as has been said, you're not going to get a modern and/or well equipped boat. That said, old boats are more interesting and bits cost no more to replace than than on less old ones, less if you frequent boat jumbles, although more those bits may be nearer to the end of their life than on a newer boat.

Try a Trident 24 (Fin, triple or lifting keel), Snapdragon 24 twin keel, Seamaster 23 (lift keel?) Westerly 25 twin keel, Westerly Warwick 21, Halcyon 23 (fin or triple), Islander 23 twin, Eventide 24 (plywood)

Hi
The Hurley 24 mentioned by Dyflin looks very good. Had one for years. There is more grp in one of them than in a Bavaux 99.

I agree, I had one, and when I drilled a large hole for the log, It was just under 1.5 inch thick!!.

Try looking at a Seamaster 23. Built like the proverbial brick privvy and offers good space for the length and reasonable (although not stella) sailing performance. One for sail in Weymouth in your price range. It has diesel inboard, heads, galley, 5 berths etc. I don't own one but have admired one near our moorings in Scotland for a few years. The owner swears by it (but not at it that often!).
