Just heard from Classic Marine that Lanocote no longer comes in half-litres, it's now a litre or nothing. So it's gonnae be a litre.

Apart offering to apply some to Superstrath's propellor, what other uses can the team come up with?

If you sweaters are made with wool from east coast flocks you colud always wash them in the washing machine with one part lanolin to 20 parts water to add the lanolin to bring the wool up to the same standard as wool from west coast flocks.

The crofters on Harris used to do this when there was a dry winter to bring the wool up to the standard needed for proper Harris Tweed cloth though they of course used a barrel and a wooden paddle.

I keep telling folks but nobody listens, elbow grease, 1000 grit wet/dry and Brasso at £1.30/tin in Wilkinsons is all you need. Lanolin only works on slow revving sheep's bums. I just got back 10 minutes ago from polishing mine (prop, not bum) ready to lift back in on Tuesday, you can see your face in it, it looks more like a winners trophy than an underwater screw.

Welcome back to the land of the living, i here you rescued
from your liferaft that you always carry, i have noticed you wear it on your back, when i first saw it i thought it was Quasimodo.I would have a word with that wife of yours
re your exaggerated demise. some thing about your cock
being shot. more pics please Tony

We lifted out 3 weeks ago having been afloat 12 months and there were a few (5 or 6) barnacles on each of the 3 blades in by the root/hub, other than that just scale/slime. I removed all of the crud whilst it was still wet after the pressure wash and the yardies were on tea break, just used an old bit of plastic batten and a nylon scourer, and it went back easily to the shiny finish. 45 minutes of wet and dry and 30 minutes of Brasso and job done, very therapeutic too 'cos it means all the other out of the water jobs are now DONE!!!

We do use our boat every weekend plus holidays up to November, so the boat isn't static too long and I suspect the few barnacles we do get come after we pack it in in November. Of course for your size of props, numbers of blades and number of props and those not being at working height when out of the water, it might be more irksome! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Suggestions: Uses for lanolin?

Robin, I entirely agree with your method and it is exactly what I do on our prop. The shinier the better and a mirror finish the best of all. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I've tried lanolin (heated and un-heated), Tri-lux and God knows how many other a/f paints over the years and nothing works completely. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Like you, when we hauled the boat out at the end of last summer, there were a few barnacles on the prop nut and the Stripper, but the blades themselves were clear but dull. Polished it back to mirror standard yesterday and put it back on today. Lovely!! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I watch these Forums with great interest to see the latest 'magical' answer, but it hasn't come yet that 's for sure!!! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

No it was the hood which is rolled at the back of my neck. I tried to deploy it, but operator error and a basic misunderstanding of the nature of Velcro left it as a less-than-fashionable lump.
I suppose that describes me really.

If you're gonnae poke aboot ma yat dae some work oan it whiles ye're there.
Mind you, wi that much lanolin, ye could dae the whole erse o' Shard. Ye'd skitter through the watter like yin o' Mr. Lipton's racing yats, show they other so-called Chentlemen Cruisers a clean pair o' heels.

My scruffy prop spends most of its life out of the water, on account of the Sonic leg, so encrustations of crustaceans are unlikely. It would look very nice polished up, however.

What I would like to solve is the propshaft fouling! We have an exposed stainless steel propshaft that starts off about 30mm diameter and ends up double that with all sorts of squelchy nasties although many only take up their perch after we stop sailing. Polishing S/S doesn't work of course as there is no copper content, Trilux only puts a smile on Mr International's face and the Prop protect or whatever sold for props/shafts doesn't even have the decency to work here for the guy that sells it!

Of course with all the lanolin being extracted for sale, maybe I could use the excess wool to knit a little jacket to put round the shaft, it could keep the barnies warm.

i have been using the spray on stuff by international "prop-o-drev"
on prop + shaft. it seems to work ok

Can you define 'OK' please?? If it works I might try it on the shaft, is it a 2nd mortgage job or just a short term loan?
