Hi Everyone:

I feel quite out of my element here as I am not even close to being a millionaire, but this appears to the place to be!

I guess I'll never know unless I ask. I am looking to get a used boat, basically for sport fishing and family outtings. I really like the style of this type boat (yacht):

http://www.albemarleboats.com/

I am not sure what this style of boat is called.

I realize these boats can be upwards of $250,000.00.

I have about to $20,000 to $30,000 (Canadian!) to spend on something like this and I just wondered if any of you can recommend some reputable boats names I might look for? Am I realistic in thinking I can get a boat of this style that will fit into my budget and be a decent boat? I have checked some of the local boats for sale and I don't know enough to make an informed decision. I have seen boats that look good and are of this style in this price range so I know they are out there. I would use the services of a surveyor. What is a good range for the year of the boat?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, Glenn

If you can get something that looks like that for that money I'll have two.

The only other boat I can think of is a Luhrs (spelling suspect) or blackfin you should be able to pick one up from the Keys area (I am assuming your in Canada)

Good hunting welcome to the madhouse,

Hi there, welcome, you'll have a job to find something like that for 20-30k unless its a very old one and needs repair.

Your better bet is to look for something newer but smaller like a sea ray or Doral (built in Canada), not sport fishey but will give you a good starting point to learn from and easy to re sell or trade up if you buy right.

Hey Gang;

Thank you all for the replies. I thought my question may seem a little far tetched, but I only asked because I have seen many boats in the local Buy and Sell guide that is put out weekly.

I have seem many boats, one that appeals to me is called: Trojan, which seems to be the look I am after. They are older, late 70's to mid 80's. Is this too old for a boat? I haven't looked at them yet, but they claim in the ad to be in great shape. Of course I would have a surveyor check it out first.

I saw them under this link:

http://www.trader.ca/search/Results.asp?BFROM=1&BAD=
N&BPRICE=N&BTYPE=B&BCAT=6&BOREGION=-1&BYEAR1

I have heard of Bertram, haven't seen any of those yet. Yes, I am in Canada.

Thanks again, Glenn

As has been mentioned 20-30K will not buy much in a sportfishing boat less than about 25 yr old. You might also look at Cabo, Wellcraft, Tiara, Grady White, Hatteras, and look at yachtworld.com under Boats for Sale, where you can be very specific in searching in advanced search by type, make, age, size, price, location etc. Good luck.

Thank you all very much for the advice. I'll keep looking for sure. Just as a matter of interest, is there anything wrong with a boat that is 20-25 years old? Assuming it is OK'd by a surveyor, it that really all one has to be concerned with?

Thank you, Glenn
