/Have negotiated a week's sailing time with a couple of friends , idea is to do a lot of sailing mileage! Any thoughts on potential itineraries from the Orwell? I draw 2 metres (probably just over).

My thoughts were either:

1 Orwell -Lowestoft-Schevingenen- Ostend-Ramsgate-Orwell (but suspect the Schevingenen-> Ostend leg would not be pleasant!

2. Orwell - Boulogne - Fecamp - St Vaast - Alderney -Portsmouth - Ramsgate-Orwell

Any other ideas?

I think that weather forecasts are now good enough for you to choose the option that gives the better hope of not getting stuck abroad. In my experience, Ostend is the hardest place to return from, as you can get stuck in a persistent NW 5-6, though perhaps this is unlikely in May. The Channel route would be more rewarding scenically, with the option of better cheese.

First impression: both itineraries seem very 'ambitious' for just a one week trip.
The weather can still be quite unsettled in May.

Agreed. Seems more like a delivery trip than a holiday....seven days of travelling out of a nine day break and that all assumes good weather/favourable tides.

Yep! I like sailing, SWMBO likes visiting places .. so idea is to get some of the miles lust out of my system early in the season ;-)

It's just jimi is too tight to buy marina space or visit the bars and restaurants. Whizzing round the North Sea for 7 days for nowt except the cost of Granola and Fray Bentos.:D

Personally

Orwell, Antwerp, Boulogne, Cherbourg, Solent, home.

Understood.
Still, it's May...
Last year I had 5 weeks off work in May and early June.
The plan was to head north - either Shetland or Norway depending on the prevailing wing (NW or SW).
Some of it singlehanded.
Weather was atrocious for most of the month. Never a window large enough to be certain that a) I would get there and b) I wouldn't get stuck there.
Best I managed was a singlehanded trip to Ostend. Trip there was pleasant enough (SW 5-6). Trip back however, SW 7-8. Not in a hurry to repeat that leg.

FWIW: out of both your proposed itineraries, I would go for the first one, but counterclockwise.

Last w/e is in the diary, its Bev's birthday on the Friday so thats going to give her lots of ammo for future negotiations .. ie " I spent my birthday feeling ill, cold and miserable in the middle of the North Sea just for you!" May go over on the Thursday instead to avoid that scenario ;-)
