Can anyone suggest a book for DIY sail repair / modification please?

I need to change my hank on jib to roller reefing and as cash is tight I'm going to do it myself. So I'm looking for a good book......

Many thanks

John

ps I've already got some instructions from Sailrite

And I will third it. Made my own sails from scratch using the Sailmakers Apprentice. Very happy with the results. As said, a good read too.

And cheap on that Amazon link. Notice that the 2nd hand one are more expensive than new...

this book is the real knees of the bees.

It has excellent textual descriptions, clear graphics, and a through methodolgy.

For machines, you can wait for ages for a Reads Sailmaker, or until some kind forumite wants to sell one. ;)

I started, however, with an old Husqvarna: solid steel, and all the stitches and zigags you can need. It goes through five layers of terylene. You'll find then for about £70 in sewing machine shops - no-one wants them because they are so heavy.

Jeremy Howard Williams, of Ratsey and Lapthorne, wrote 2 or 3 well regarded books on sailmaking and repair, eg "Sails". Although originally from the late '60's, I think that updated editions were published.

Hi
I have used several sails of the hank on variety, with roller reefing with good results. Over a period of 3/4 years also in the UK, no noticeable deterioration of sails from UV. All you need to do is take off the bronze piton hanks and replace them with plastic slugs to fit your particular size of foil slot. I accept that in the longer term a UV strip is advisable to protect an expensive sail but another way of looking at it is that cheap old sails are disposable, over several years. Plenty of S/H hank on sails around for less than the cost of having a UV strip fitted, but different if you can do it yourself.

Sailrite usa

Have a look at sailrite website in the states. They have instructions to change from hanks to r/r. Fantastic helpful company.
