Suffolk

Reminds me of my early boating days when I lived there. The Orwell is nice with the town marina at the end. Short walk to the old part of Ipswich and several key side restaurants. Micro brewery also very close.
There are lock gate times so check.
There are other marinas on the way but I’m out of touch.
For an adventure try the Deben up to Walderingfield and maybe Woodbridge.
Very tricky entrance, talk to locals first.
hope this helps a bit

There are lots of marinas on the Orwell - all 24 hour access. Shotley, Suffolk Yacht Harbour, Royal Harwich. MDL Woolverstone, Fox's, and through the lock into Ipswich there are Neptune Marina and Ipswich Haven. Shotley is via a lock available 24 hours call on VHF Ch80. The Ipswich lock Operation of the lock - Ipswich Haven Marina
Look at East Coast Pilot website for latest survey charts for entering the Deben or the Ore. Don't think of entering unless you have read the chartlets and there is not a strong Easterly. Lovely river - the Tidemill Marina is in lovely Woodbridge. Look at their website for tidal heights over the cill for every hour of every tide. You may need to ring them when on the river as VHF reception is not great.

All being well we will be heading down that way soon. Worth considering:
- The Deben - entrance info here. When going in expect to be very close to the beach. Mooring buoy at Ramsholt and dinghy ashore to the Ramsholt Arms; Anchorage at the Rocks (before you get to Waldringfield); Tidemill Yacht Harbour in Woodbridge (river dries out at low water so need to plan)
- The Orwell - Woolverstone MDL - nice walk along the river to the Butt and Oyster at Pin Mill; Suffolk Yacht Harbour - has the club in an old lightship for drinks and food; Ipswich - Haven Marina or Neptune (the latter is near a noisy pub so check where they want to put you - we tend to go to the Haven)
- The Stour - anchorages only in reality but pleasant enough
- Walton backwaters - anchorages at Stone Point and Hamford Water; Titchmarsh Marina with restaurant on site

On your way up you have the Crouch and the Blackwater of course. We like the Blackwater - Tollesbury is good but river dries and planning required. Bradwell has a bar on site and the Green Man a short walk away. For some thing different Heybridge Basin offers a wilder location with a couple of pubs nearby (well, there were when we went years ago)

Actually, thinking about it, the beer is rubbish, lots of sandbanks and not at all friendly so best to stay away…..don’t want too much competition for moorings! ?
