I understand that research is being carried out in Basin
Vauban, St Malo, on underwater mobile phone technology.

I can see the advantages immediately of being able to dive, pehaps to look at an impeller/paddlewheel and then phone a friend for advice whilst still down there.

Anyone know any more about this?

I would say that more research is needed.

My perfectly good Nokia doesn't work in 22 metres of water. Mind you my Casio Seapathfinder is probably telling the correct time and I dont know if the Musto Sunnies get much chance to do their bit.

I would very much doubt if such high frequencies would work under water - seem to remember that attempts to do the same with subs used very low frequencies.

and is there nowhere safe from the wifely call " where are you, you know my mothers coming for lunch" /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

My wife's Nokia 3120 is now goes straight to answerphone when you ring it, and its in 6m of water below the pontoons at Ardfern. Any divers out there, its about half way along the outside edge of the eastern pontoon, free to a good home!

Cheers
Patrick

Sadly, funding was withdrawn before the programme was able to be completed. Preliminary results were unequivocal however and there seems to be little doubt that mobile phones do not work well after or during immersion in salt water.

Why restrict this to teenagers
What about all the daft knobs on planes who insist on telling everyone they know, that they are on the Transconitnental Pan England flight from Blackpool to Stansted?
Or the silly beggars in Supermarkets phoning home to ask where the soup is stacked?

Just put your mobile in a condom, tie a knot in the end and it should work after you have dropped it overboard. Your ear might get a bit greasy though !
