hi forum
for reasons i will rather not describe, my boat's exhaust 1 foot above the waterline on the port side was submerged for maybe 10 seconds while the engine was running. This created a great white bubbling wash with a whooosh ! I shut down and ran the engine later and all seems ok.
my question is do you think any seawater have gotten into my engine thru the exhaust as a result of what happened ?

While tour engine was running it is highly unlikely that any water could get down your exhaust(the pressure of exhaust gasses coming out would prevent such as thing happening)evn with engine running the goose neck and water trap should stop it .Kieron

consider the 4x4 driving through a river using a snorkel to get air into the engine, most dont bother with a changed exhaust, and thus on occassion the exhaust can be as much as 3ft underwater. Probably not a good idea to allow the engine to stay at tick-over revs, but otherwise not a problem - in a car, it doesnt do the catalytic converter any good, as the suddden cooling can crack the converter, but so far this has not been a requirement for boats!

Joeh,

That's not fair - you don;t get to ask advice without 'fessing up to the circumstances!

If you kept the engine running then no problem. If you stopped the engine whilst the exhaust was submerged you better hoope you have a good water trap.

Water ingress can occur via the exhaust.

This happened to the workboat on the seismic survey ship I work on. All you have to do is remove all the injectors (alas, our is a six cyl) and crank the engine. Any water in the pots will be blown out of the engine via the injector apertures. Then run the engine to 'dry' it out, and consider an oil change. Make sure you have removed the injector seats too, or they will be blown out of the aperture. Do not stand over the engine whilst cranking for this reason.

Cheers, and hi to kieronR

Same here. I always check to see if there's someone standing behind when I start up - there's quite a blast of water! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
