Sub 5K Weekend Motor Cruiser

I like the Family Four. Will keep an eye out for one with a decent 4-stroke engine. Or one without an engine, so I can add one of my choosing.

Also keep an eye out for the slightly larger Shetland Kestrel or its predecessor, the 570. You should also think about frequenting here: http://www.shetlandowners.co.uk . It's not as busy as this place, but has a more targeted audience.

I had a shetland 535 in the early 1960's and to go to sea I put a pair of Johnson 33 hp outboards on. and I am glad I did as going round Great Orme one packed up.

For sure. Think it might be a bidding listing. If it goes for that, with that engine, good wee buy !

We have a Shetland Family Four, and have had a lot of fun with it, all in the sea on the West Coast of Scotland. Fits almost all of your criteria, with a Mariner 75 Optimax pushing her along at up to 30 knots. Does around 2 NM/litre at displacement speeds. Sleeps 4 at a pinch, 3 reasonably comfortably, 2 luxuriously.

Lots of information on our refurbishment of the boat and the trips we have done in her are at https://shetlandf4.wordpress.com/.

Thanks for the ongoing suggestions. I liked the Black Hawk, but I would need to get the price down by over 1000 GBP to allow for a trailer. Doubt if that will work.

I really like the Shetland Family Four suggestion on eBay - even though it needs some work. Unfortunately it is a VERY long drive for me. At a 12+H round trip, probably too long.

Nice blog RBmatthews!
