Just been up the field to feed the sheep in my tractor- they get pretty hungry in snow and they needed a new big bale of haylage. I was nice and warm with the heater going and began to wonder why my boat doesnt have a blower heater like this.!!

I have a heater on board but its a separate diesel Tohatso system - so why cant we use the engine heat to warm the wheel house n cabin?????????

As i say its back to basics with this question sooorrry!

Regards

Mike

Could be that you don't have a radiator to retain the heat.

Forumite Littleship has just fitted the very same system to his ship

Up Lumb, you need a shed, that the sheep can go into, when it's cold, best to feed them in there. Also, if you get some Jacob sheep, they have big horns, to shovel the snow away.

Regarding the tractor, I suspect it will have a far bigger engine than your boat, plus the boat will have far bigger cabins than the tractor. So where as you could use your engine for heating, it wont work when you stop and probably not have enough heat for the whole boat.

I think the sheep would be better in Whitewell bottom, or maybe Helmshore.:)

I guess it comes down to patterns of usage. You don't spend much time relaxing in a tractor with the engine switched off - many people spend long periods on their boats at anchor or tied up in a marina. Running the engine just to generate heat would be very uneconomical - and probably not very good for the engine - hence the vast majority of boats will be fitted with some sort of blown-air diesel heating. If you have installed that, are you going to go to the expense of fitting a heat exchanger coupled to the engine cooling system as well? Probably not.

You can combine he two, like many busses and trucks (although they may use the extra heater to heat coolant hence keep the engine warm and use the standard radiator/blower).

Sheep can stand the cold- its cold and wet that bothers, how would you like a wet freezing wet blanket on ya! Any way not to drift - i dont think my boat space is bigger than a minibuss or a large 4x4 AND i reckon the engine is bigger than any car we own- so imho i just cant see the logic of not having a system to harness the engine heat alongside a stand alone system for anchoring etc

But as said before, you can do as you say, just add a heater to your engine, you should find a simple one in any scrap yard, not a difficult job, except it will be another set of pipes and gubbings around the boat and you will still need the other heater anyway.

Is the scrap yard still going up Rake head, Stacksteads??

More to the point, my sheep and donkey loved their shed, that they could go into it any time they wished, all the sencible ones had their lambs there, of course there was always an exception, which made life difficut.

Back to the boat, one of my engines heats the hot water, so the fittings are all there ready to conect up to.

On second thoughts, have you thought of taking the heater out of the tractor and giving it to the sheep.:D

If you have one engine doing your hot water, I'd use your other one to provide heating, look where the pipes come from for your hot water system, they will be from the front of the engine. For heating what your basicly looking for, is a radiator and a fan, conect to the right places and the engine will take care of pumping water round,. Go to K suplies Clough fold and get BSP pipe fittings, to fit the engine, then pipe to match, find a heater. It will mostly still be BSP and will fit.

Look for Red Dot Heater on the internet and on Google. They plumb into your engine cooling system and have 1-2 12volt fans to toss the air around. Comfy while cruising and cost nothing to run. In port or at anchor is another story.
