hi all

I just opened stuffing box on my boat - something that I never done since bying her two years ago(shame on me!). It turned out to be of the most unusual kind: there is no compression "spacer" and flax is packed not into the space between box and the shaft, but into the hold-down cup itself! Has anyone seen anything like that before? How do you pack it - just put flax rings into the cup and tighten it down or there are some tricks I should be aware of?

you cant beat stuffing a good box...ahem...sorry

The only tip I have is to make sure the ends of the rings of packing are distributed around the shaft, like the piston rings in an engine, assuming when you say flax its the square section sextant packing type stuff.

First of all, clean the stuffing box of dirt, grit and old grease. Put in some waterresistant grease, preferably teflon based. Put a protective winding of vinyl insulation tape on the propeller shaft, but not on a spot that goes in the cutless bearing, or the stuffing box itself. Wind the cord ( preferably the teflon-greased type) round the shaft. Take your favourite Taiwanese cutter blade and , using the vinylized portion of the shaft as a base, cut sideways through two windings. Avoid fingers, it's generally messy. You should end up with a ring with oblique ends, which overlap. Put three (works for most stuffing boxes) of these rings in, the open ends 30 degrees off each other.
Take off the insulation tape...
