It appears I havea stuck valve on my engine - which started, but produced a lot of smoke from the Rocker Box cover.
Anybody got anytips as to how to free the valve without taking the cylinder head off?

Smoke from rocker box cover, are you sure its a stuck valve.

If it is a stuck valve (assertain by removing rocker box cover and check by turning by hand and looking), it depend on why it is stuck. Has the valve spring broken?, has the tappet broken.

If spring and tappet look well and there is a valve definately stuck then it is a case of why.

A not uncommon problem is when people have left the engine sat for long periods, ie over winter, in one position (without giving the engine at least 1/3 to 1/2 turn by hand every couple of weeks or so to stop the same valves being compressed for the whole time). A valve having been compressed for months decides to stay there. If this is a the case you may just be lucky and get away with some WD 40 and a sharp tap.

If however it has stuck during normal service you have a problem, and any attempts to do anything without removing the head and fully investigate is laible to cause more damage.

You could of couse get hold of an endoscope and try and look inside through the injector hole, but honestly, on a 4108 it is easier and strongly recommended to remove the head.

I don't think so!!!!!!! What makes you think the smoke from the rocker cover is a stuck valve.Does the engine breath to one of the inlet valves?????

Turning the engine over by hand and not with the starter with the rocker cover removed will show if this is the case.

Follow the advice from JC,

Hi
As the Johns say take off the rocker cover and have a look at the valves while turning the engine. Also check to see where the smoke is actually coming from. It could be coming up from the sump/crankcase. Sadly I think this is more likely if the engine is getting on a bit.
