I have stripped acres of varnish in my time - but never oily stuff such as D1.

Does anybody have any experience of this, or anything I should be aware of, before I attack it with the hair dryer and scraper?

I am sceptical about the "soaks into the wood bit". I did my douglas fir mast with the full treatment. Big mast and a couple of cans of D1 "soaked" into it plus several coats (prefer not to remember how many!) of D2. Not a success. OK for a couple of years, but as soon as the film broke it failed almost as you looked at.

Anyway stripped it back to bare wood and the only difficult bits were where the D2 had stuck well. No sign of D1 deeper in the wood than surface so just rubbed down, cleaned and coated with Sikkens Novatec/top. Best thing I ever did! Still there after 5 years and just refreshed with one coat.

So a rub down and clean with white spirit and think it will be ready for finish of your choice.

Oh b**** and I did all my woodwork with it a couple of years ago.

Still looks great though. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I have a strong suspicion that D1 only works well on certain types of timber. I've yet to determine which they are.

Not the type they build boats of. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Used the stuff on the cockpit area of Fosca, Time restraints and concern over creating a varnish like finish to an area of teak that would be stood on when wet I never got round to using the Deks 2 as specified. All traces of Deks 1 where pretty much gone within 2 yrs without any work on my pary though the teak did not go gray as it would usually. Regards, Mike.
Edit, Would point out it never went black the way Teak oil will either!
