yachting world gave it a good but passing write up recently. anyone got personal experience

Yes. I once nearly sunk in Strangford lough. Spent three weeks there and made some life long friends. The enterance needs treating with caution. Do as the Pilot book says. Theres a 7 knot current and bad overfalls. Get that right and it's about the most wonderfull place you have ever been. The story is in the arcives some where. Worth a read.

Spent a nice relaxed week mucking around in there with the family. Pilotage is entertaining. Don't imagine the entrance will be ok if you are just a few minutes late, in my experience it switches back and forth almost instantly. On exit we had intended to go out with the very last of the ebb but were delayed by a fouled prop that made us 5-10 minutes late. We very nearly didn't get out !

We found Quoile YC very pleasant and friendly with lovely walks ashore. I found some of the bigger town on the shore very strange, with a distinctly unpleasant atmosphere. We also saw a very pretty little long keeled yacht sunk by the incoming tide after she had gone aground and been completely stranded on the beach off Killyleagh (sp?).

I lived on the shores and was brought up sailing in the Lough. People have been known to move home to live there having visited it by boat.
