Well ok I'll accept that. It was some years ago. Ferries were very cleaver though and went side ways most of the time. And picked there way up and down the easy bits. Then dashing across the fast bits. It's very strong. But it's also a big world out there. So there may be others faster....

Oh yes - but the counter to it is that my GPS registered 12knots over the ground in the middle of the flood. Never been so fast!!
I thought someone might have offered the ferry that runs in Cuan Sound as a contender.

The Maid of Glencoul (the Kylesku ferry to Scourie) was diagonal to the true direction when she attempted the crossing. The fact that from the telephone box on the North bank you had to ring the bar at the Kylesku Hotel (on the South bank) to get the ferry cap't and crew out was coincidental.

We were a group of six boats together entering on the flood. Five of us turned into Audley and anchored but the sixth, a 36 ft Westerly with a big engine, was a little later than the rest and didn't see us until he passed. He then turned and motored against the tide for about an hour, making no progress. Eventually he gave up, anchored downstream and joined us a few hours later.
We also recorded 11 - 12 knots over the ground. Passing yachts look incongruously fast as they motor by.

Near Grey Dogs, mate in his earlier days of madness had 22 knots on the log in there, and was not moving in relation to shore, now learnt more sense !.
There's always sailing ( or should it be motoring ) down hill in the Gulf of Corryvreckan, very funny experience, lovelly anchorage ( short stay for dinner ) at the eastern end.

22 knots - Niagara doesn't run that fast does it?
Naturally I am keen to keep my promise and flood the RNLI with my fiver but perhaps a bit of reference or substantiation will have to be supplied before I can shell out. After all - its a full weeks housekeeping.

I suspect that Halcyon was intimating that the Grey Dogs ran at 22knts. Correct me if I'm wrong but a ferry doesn't run from Scarba to Lunga??
Fiver appears to be safe.
