Started last night, so bleary eyed I turned it off, this morning no leaks, but it sounds like a kettle on the boil, if you release the pressure valve it stops for a second or two.

Any thoughts?

Edit: Sorted, the thermostat has died.

Sounds like air in the system, either in the heating (engine coolant) or freshwater circuit.

Check levels. If air in the system, next step is to find out how it got/gets in there..

Thanks for that, I don't think it's air because when I release the pressure valve water comes out not air, also we are on shore power and the engine has not been running, and the taps run smoothly no gurgling etc

It could be that crud build up on the element is causing a local boil in that area. When you press the release valve you momentarily reduce the boiling point of the water and the bubbles get larger, and it goes quiet. (like a kettle changes note just before the full boil)
In your case, unlike a kettle, the power does not switch off and the pressure build up makes small bubbles and noise again.
Just a theory (probably rubbish)

+1

Sounds like it failed and started to boil, not the end of the world quite an easy fix actually :)

That's the daft thing! It's a horizontal one, so the thermostat is short (7"). Plenty of them on the net in the UK for about £8.00, but here in a backwater of Greece none to be found of that size, so I am waiting on a few emails to see if anyone is willing to courier me one, which should cost 4 times the worth of the unit! And we are sitting around waiting to get on...

It's one of these http://www.heatrodshop.com/product/sunvic-vkl2201
