Strange autopilot behaviour and Gyro fault.

Can any body help me to understand what has gone wrong with my Navman G-pilot 3100.

The boat suddenly turned hard to starboard and the alarm and message was “GUS error”.

The manual confirmed that the fault was the gyro unit and turning hard to starboard is the expected action.

The strange thing was that the autopilot was on standby at the time and not in use.

Later I tried using the autopilot on auto and it worked well on holding a compass bearing for about 10 minutes then the same fault occurred. I tried switching it back on and the same message, but I also noticed the display showed the setting was switching from standby to auto and back repeatedly.

I have checked the voltage while the hydraulic motor was operating and the voltage was not dropping below 12v.

The wiring and all connections appear clean and sound.

The Navman is obsolete so I don’t think any parts are available so an expensive replacement is the probable outcome.

Any explanation of what was happening would be interesting and if any one knows how to fix it I would be very interested indeed.

Many thanks Paul.
