Hi everyone,

It appears as though my Stowe log has given up the ghost.

Seeing as though it's highly unlikely that I'm going to find a genuine Stowe impeller that works as a replacement. I've decided I'm going to replace the lot.

What I need to know is, does anyone know of an impeller that I can use with the existing impeller tube/housing? I really don't want to get involved with removing the old plastic tube, grinding a new hole to fit the new one etc. etc.

I don't think I could trust my own installation holding and I don't want to pay ££££££ to my boatyard to do it either.

I read Simrad bought Stowe, has anyone bought a Simrad log and found it just plugged in where the old Stowe impeller was ?

I hope someone can help.

Many thanks,

- Haddock

Have you tried AW Marine?

AW Marine bought the entire stock of Stowe spare parts when the Stowe brand was sold to Simrad. You ought to try them first, before you contemplate a replacement system.

Re: Have you tried AW Marine?

Hi, Captain Haddock,
this morning I just finished to remove the Stowe Log Paddlewheel (which I suppose is what you are referring to as "impeller": mind You, impeller is referred to something more or less shaped as a propeller, which rotates in the water around an axis parallel to the water flow.
In my knowledge, Stowe had only "impellers" that were towed by the boat (and seems, often swallowed by fishes in ocean crossings), but as You wonder about working around a through-hull hole, I suspect You have, as I do, a paddle wheel speed sensor.
OK: mine is not working because the little magnetic little **!!!#### piece that used to stay inside one of the 4 paddles (and which provides a signal when crossing the magnetic field generated in the sensor case) decided to go loose; so I freed the paddle (just two tiny screws that act as axis for the wheel) and I'm searching the web to find in Milano the ONE small outfit that does repair and maintenance for any type of marine instrument (they are still in business but they moved a few years ago).
In my case the problem is rather simple: I just have to replace a magnetic cilinder of a couple of mm. in diameter and may be half a centimetre in lenght.
As my log is now some TWENTY years old (God almighty bless Mr. Stowe!!), and I never had any other problem with the log, it might well be that our problems are similar, unless You cracked the trasducer case; if so, I offer to buy the whole transducer as is (of course I really need only the paddle); if You only have a paddle problem, as I fix mine, I'll let You know.
Cheer up, perhaps the problem is less than You think; I also read that Nasa or Navico or someone else have transducers electronically compatible with Stowe instrument (or was it vice-versa? Sorry, I' not sure), but their web sites aren't very helpful: starting from monday I'll do some enqiries, so idìf by then You can escribe more precisely the shortcomings of Your log, I'll keep an eye open for solutions; don't esitate to Email me.

I have just sold my set of Stowe instrumensts including transducers on eBay. There was another set for sale at the same time. Maybe you could find a replacement transducer on eBay?

Hi gianenrico,

Yes it's the paddlewheel that's at fault (kicks himself for getting it wrong - impeller, doh!).

Well my problem is quite simple, the display reads 0 and the display appears to be ok. However, when I spin the paddle wheel nothing displays.

I've had this problem since last season, I know I seated it correctly last season whilst it was in the water and still nothing displayed.

I checked the contacts with the log display and all seems ok, I've not got any broken wires from the paddlewheel to the instrument head.

I've not checked for little magnets though so I'll take a look at this.

I'll give AWMarine a call in the morning.
