My stowe log started making a faint clicking sound then stopped working. The 'prop' still goes round freely but the needle doesn't move. Tommorow I'm going to have a look at it but I don't know anything about them and how they work. I assume it has a cable driven from the 'prop' and this is the problem. It's probably the same age as the boat (1980). Are spares available? can anyone briefly explain how it works?
I like to 'go in' with a bit of background knowledge if possible.
Thanks
Paul

Stowe repairs only available from AW marine http://www.awmarine.com/ in haslar mariner... Be prepared for a hefty bill.... You may want to check ebay sometimes replacements come up there, but not that often. And yes AW Marine is the only place in the world that Stowe equipment can be sorted....

Thanks everyone...
I too found on taking ownership of the boat that our Stowe Navigator 1 speed log cable had been stood on at some point breaking the cable at the tranducer head. I had been told by several people that these units were no longer in production so resigned myself to fitting a new unit with a subsequent new hole cut out of the hull. On reading the above post I made one last call to A.W.Marine - and success - the tranducer units are back in production again due to demand! A bit costly at £95 plus VAT - but it has saved lots of work and one less hole in the boat. It was delived next day too.
Thanks again - it's nice to know the forum works!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Agree about AW Marine charges. I've sourced parts from them in the past, but found the prices unbelievable and, in my case, unacceptable.

Paul, I would strongly recommend that you obtain a firm quote before having any work done (if this is the route you go) or, far better IMHO, is to replace the unit with a more modern type. In the end the latter will prove far cheaper.

As Bluepippa says, AW are a monopoly and the prices reflect this.

I'm on my way to have a look.I'll report back. I too find replacement part costs beyond belief sometimes. As suggested it may be best to replace the whole lot.
Thanks
Paul
