Stowe Anemometer - Does it come off?

Hi,

Ok - I can't afford to have the mast down this year. But my Stowe Anemometer has stopped spinning.

Anyone know if they are removable? If so, how? I'm hoping there is some kind of bayonet fitting. I'm sure it would be obvious from the comfort of the hard. Less so dangling from a halyard...

At the mast end of the shaft, there's a screw-on sleeve over the shaft (about 70mm long and 30mm diameter, with a knurled section). Unscrew this sleeve, and you can pull the shaft off the mast fitting (there's a multipin plug & socket).

The anemometer may need a new bearing. You can get this from AW Marine.

Iv'e just done mine it unscrews and pulls off, the unit also comes apart easy. I then soaked the bearing in oil, did it last week and its still spinning fine.
As I said in an earlier post its cheaper to go up in a bosuns chair. I'm lucky to have an impoverished daughter who didn't mind risking life and limb for a tenner.

Many thanks. By weird coincidence someone has just posted a pdf of the original manual on the MOA forum! Apparently you're supposed to oil them annually!

My daughter is only 4 - and anyway she never does anything you ask her on principle.

There is a Stowe manual recently posted on the MOA site -in the Tech Library and below Howell Rees's post. It's easy to remove when you are up the mast - but have some tape or a cap ready to seal off the connector.

It sounds as if we have the same unit, once you have taken it off there are 2 small nuts on the front of the unit, the lower one, that is the one closest to the cups should have a short hollow tube looks as if it's an oiling point, undo it and with a little effort the cups pull out with the bearing, take care to note the position of the washers

Good news:

A little oil has done the trick. A good clean helped as well.

Bad news:

The steaming light needs replacing.

Also I've found the manuals for all my Stowe instruments. If anyone wants a copy I'll try and get them scanned.
