Ok I have quite a bit of space in the engine room and would like to use it for a bit of stowage ( fixed down properly). But it then occured to e what is safe to stow in such an area.

Im thinking of engine spares, extra oil and fillers etc, maybe the extra big spare fender. Could I get away with the rolled up avon??

So what experience have other forumites had and what is abig nono for the space and what is safe???

The laz on the P42 is massive, why not keep it all in there?

Cheers

You can keep things there is lashed down but beware items that will not take prolonged heat - it can be 50deg C in the e/room, long after you have shut engines down. Spare water pump impellers is a good example - they can go hard in the heat so best to store them elsewhere

on a coded boat we are not allowed to keep anything combustible in there. SO no spare oil etc. Spares are tool are fine. The rules I'm sure are there for a reason so I hope that's a start for you.

Hi Jim,
Yes I have the generator, outboard, and inflatable in there and so was thinking of moving some of the easy stowage stuff elswhere.

How about the engine tools ( in plastic volvo holder) extra fenders, the cockpit wooden seats???

Do I take it then that most of you dont use the space at all?

Gotcha. I used to keep the tender on the platform, and I had a bag made for the sunpad cushions so that they could live up on the flybridge - and everything used to fit in the lazarette.

Mine is only a little boat but there is still a proportionately large empty space down there .

It remains empty.

Generator and outboard would be out the way but both contain petrol fumes and I would be concerned about them moving in rough conditions.

I used to store jerry cans of petrol in the engine bay of my Bayliner, I am a bit more cautious now.

whats wrong with oil containers in engine storage plus distilled water?? would the heat break down the plastic bottles

the fenders have ropes on the end that would concern me.
the water bottles could mangle into the pulleys, throttle levers and gear levers etc.

Just adding more potential problems in my opinion.

I keep an old large cool box in the engine bay which I keep spares and fluids in along with some tools etc. It is strapped down and clicks closed so should be quite safe. It also protects its occupants from the heat of the engines.

Apart from some cleaning kit we keep the covers and ringos down there. We have a large empty area that's separated from the lump by some pillars so the covers can't get thrown at the belts. Mind you we tie them down as well.

One day I'll get round to fitting some netting to complete the separation.

I have a 5 litres container of oil for top ups and a 5 litre ontainer of coolant down there. They fit nice and tight into a cubby hole safe and sound. There is of course automatic fire fighting kit down there, but the chances of the container of oil catching fire spontaneously is extrememely unlikely I would have thought. Maybe someone will inform me otherwise!

I have spare 5litre oil container down in the engine bay which is wedge behind the calorifier and battery box. The only other item is a dehumidifer crystals (keeps the damp down and stops the pipes going green).

The main thing that stops me storing anything else is the access to the engine bay i.e. time consuming when you have to remove seating etc to the point you can't be bothered.

Engine room is a heavy lump at one end of the boat, adding to the weight is not a good idea.

Many would get a good improvement in performance and comfort by properly stowing all heavy items midship and down low.

Good luck. :)
