Hi all,

So heavy rain is now falling across Wales and much of southern and western England, and all of us are in for a soaking tonight. What are cuasing most concern are the winds, and the models aren't doing a very good job of it. You see, there appear to be two centres to this low, and the resolution of the models does not apear to be picking this up yet (although it is trying). This is causing confusion about exactly where the strongest winds will be. My suspiciion is that nearest to it. The severe weather warnings coming from the Met Office are sensible and should be watched carefully as this system really does have the potential to cause some very severe weather, and not just on the coasts. England, Wales and southern Ireland remain most at risk.

You can follow the low hour by hour at http://meteocentre.com/analyse/map.php?date=0&lang=en&map=UK&size=large (and I'll publish the image below)

Odd in Portsmouth harbour this lunchtime, lightish wind blowing due east and peeing down, then within 10 minutes turned due west and stopped raining. Temperature noticeably rose 3 or 4 degrees. Did a warm front come through or something?

For a really useful picture try www.xcweather.co.uk which I think gives the most useful and complete picture of what is going on and usually gives the best forecast for your chosen area.

I think I will pop down to Gosport and just check her over tomorrow. Should be OK as I always keep her springs really tight, so she shouldn't be banging into the pontoon, but worth checking.

we're racing as usual Sunday morning. What are we likely to get in the Bristol channel.

the usual sources suggest it will have died down by then to 20 knots or so.

Hi,

As the low presure crosses eastern Ireland and moves into southern England a swathe of strong winds will affect areras to the south of it. These winds will be gusting to in excess of 80mph across southern England and Wales this morning and into the early afternoon, with 70mph gusts then crossing the Midlands by mid morning and lasting until late afternoon, these then affecting northern and eastern England this afternoon. These speeds are high enough to cause damage to trees and some structural damage too.

Weatheronline have a good place to view the latest gusts here http://www.weatheronline.co.uk/cgi-...=UK&LANG=en&ART=tabelle&JJ=xxxx&SORT=2&INT=24

As for Sunday morning in the Channel, SW'ly 20kt perhaps 25kt offshore becmg SSW 18-20kt by midday.
