Storm jib over roller furler

I haven't used one - but comforting to see from the image on the website that it can be hoisted while wearing shorts and a T-shirt. Not forgetting a rather fetching looking white cap!

I would imagine in a storm that the friction of it on the furled sail will make it impossible to hoist more than 1/2 way. Also if it flogs, and it will have to at least a bit while you are hoisting it - otherwise the friction will stop you, I would be worried about the soft shackles comming undone.

All IMHO of course. Never used one nor even seen one.

we have a similar one made by Rolly Tasker Sails that uses a zippered sleeve and have used it in winds up to 35 knots but never in big seas. Not sure how easy it would be to zip up if the bowman was getting dunked. You have to get a very tight furl on the genoa and then wrap the remaining sheets around the lower half of the furled sail and tie them off. It is a bit of mucking about but no more than rigging an inner forestay and hanking on a storm jib. To get a good sheet angle the tack has about a 1.5m lead on it so the zippered "sock" extents more than half way up the forestay. The sail shape is very good and it will drive the boat much faster than a furled genoa with the same sail area.

I'd think this sort of thing OK for a 'moderate' F7-8, but if things are getting serious one has to lower the furled sail due to its' windage; at which point this sock job will be a right pain.

IMHO better to remove the furled sail before things get really nasty, and use a proper storm jib.
