I’ve got 20l reserve in a couple of cheap Halfords 10l plastic containers.

Would it be ok to store in the cockpit locker, on the assumption that diesel doesn’t give off explosive fumes that could settle in the bilges?

Plastic cans are wonderful, but there is a risk of abrasion , especially on the base, causing pin leaks.

If you put some cheap polycarpet under the cans, and make sure they are well tied down, you should be OK. Oh yus, check the can doesn't hiss when you squeeze it - that's a duff O-ring seal in the cap.

Correct, you don't have to worry about explosive fumes. Catching fire isn't a big worry either as long as you don't provide a wick and ignition source or just use a blowtorch. :D

Biggest worry is a horrible lingering smell if it leaks. I keep 100 litres spare in my cockpit lockers with no problem in past 14 years. Same with smaller quantity on my previous boat for previous 24 years. I don't overfill and larger 30 litre containers sit on non-slip mat. Smaller ones just sit on locker floor.

It's not something we have ever been told to worry about when chartering/flotilla-sailing in the Mediterranean. But we have been more used to 35 degrees than 40 and have a bimini to shade the cockpit.
