Biscay sailors can relax.....

This has been around on the internet before - it is actually real! It was an Osprey Lines barge out of Houston and was carrying containers from Houston's Barbours Cut terminal to New Orleans, when it had a little accident in the autumn of 2001. The barge is still underneath, with the end trimmed out of the water, but the photo has been croppped so you can't see it. I have a few more pics, PM me if you want them.

A few yeas ago we were shipping some containers from Australia to Brasil. The containers were all fullly welded shut - sealed in point of fact and the ship set off with them as deck cargo

There then went a series of telex (remember that?) messages that tend to be engraved on the brain

1 Vessel Union east reported in difficulties south of new Zealand position......

2 Vessel Union East reported sinking south of new Zealand

3 Vessel Union East reported sunk south of new \zealand
position x

4 containers reported floating at position X

Realisation they're ours - Get a tug out there quick save a couple of million quid

5 Containers declared a hazard to shipping by NZ coastguard
6 Containers sunk by Royal new Zealand Air Force by cannon fire.

Worst bit for us was somebody forgot to insure the containers and we got the bill for the rental a few years later and had to pay for new replacements AAARRRGGGHHH!!!

This is actually a quite good idea. All the world's navies should use containers for sub hunting and target practise. So they have something to do and we get rid of the containers.
