2 x 1.75” stainless prop shafts with props

On Wednesday, I finally managed, after hour upon hour of hard work, to remove the prop shafts and propellers from my boat - in order to stop them from being pinched while the boat was on the hard.

I put them in the garage (at the back of our terraced house), on the floor, as there’s nowhere else I could put them until I’d separated the propellers from the shafts.

Today, two guys came with a scrap van. I saw the second of them being loaded onto the pile of scrap on the back of the van. The door to the back lane was still locked, so they must have just climbed over the wall. Stupidly, I yelled at them and they drove off before I could get outside. I was so shaken I didn’t even get the reg number.

I called 999, and a police officer came round, but of course he could only offer sympathy and take down a few details.

Am very upset and very shaken.

Will be going round the local scrap yards on Monday morning...

Awful news

I feel you're still a bit shaken but if I were you I'd phone round now because your best chance of finding the props is going to be before a scrappie has paid money for them.

Thanks.

Yes - still shaken. I'm thinking I'd rather the scrapie takes them in and I can go looking for them on another context, rather than forewarning scrappies...? It's the shafts that are the biggest loss.

Offer them a handsome reward to keep them for you, with a bonus if they take a record of the "sellers" details

Hwmbo, I'm sure you've already thought about it, but the chances are those shafts may well be cut up and go in as 'Stainless bar' I'd be amazed if the tealeaves take two traceable prop shafts in to the same scrap yard. Props will go elsewhere. If you are phoning round ask if they've taken in any 1.75 stainlesss "off cuts"...

Yes, this is exactly what I was going to do.

There must be quite a bit of forgetfulness on the part of some scrapies about the new regulations on this, otherwise there'd be no demand and noone out on commercial theft missions.

Where in the country did this happen? they are likely to get rid of them quite quickly and probably not drive that far, so if they are in the Plymouth West Devon area I'd happily drop by the metal dealers I know of to see if there are any recent bar or bronze transactions.

That's incredibly kind of you, Neil, but I'm in Gateshead!

This lament triggers an honest response.....

The highly-skilled C.Eng in the next village ( about 10 miles south of Bath ) who runs a mech. eng. design and consultancy as well as a practical workshop, has pointed me to a score of s/s driveshafts - of various diameters and lengths - propping up a corner, remaindered from some project, and asked if any yottie I know might find a use for some of them..... otherwise they'll go to the scrappie for their scrap value when he remembers and is going that way.

Should you care, let me know by PM what diameters and lengths you need, and I'll see if there's something close - then so advise you.

I have no vested interest, and the items - if any are usable - will go for 'not a lot more than scrap value'.

Addendum: Here are some sizes....

172cm x 35mm, 137.5 x 34.0, 178 x 34.9, 144 x 38.2, 112.5 x 19.2, 89.5 x 25.5, 92.5 x 31.8, 174 x 28.6, 128 x 28.6, 102.5 x 28.65, 164 x 25.5, 126.5 x 28.7, 153 x 25.5, 169 x 25.5 :)

HWMBO,

very sorry to hear of your problems.

I doubt very much the scrappies will assist, they are in league with the pikeys and will have ways around any regulation, or simply ignore the law as their suppliers do.

At my club between Chichester and Portsmouth we were warned last year that prop's were disappearig from boats on shore all along this stretch of the South Coast.

Just as one group of people shows the worst side of human nature, so another shows the best. Thanks very much indeed for that.

Alas, none of those sizes fit (mine were 1.75" / 45mm), but I hope they're of use to others...

Looking at the policy, I think mine may be covered by my house's contents insurance.

Many years ago I had an Avon Tender which I stored under our caravan parked in the front drive in semi detached suburbia.
Then one day it wasnt there!
More recently my old patched up and very leaky valves Avon Tender disappeared from where it was upside down tied to a tree near my mooring.
I really hope the thief took it out a long way without a pump and had to swim for it as the bow and stern progressively rose in the air as the air bled away rapidly!

. . . . I called 999, and a police officer came round, but of course he could only offer sympathy and take down a few details. . . . . .

I hope he did a bit more than offer sympathy. He probably knows all the thieves in the area and the type of vehicles they drive. That sort of information normally goes into their local collators system and usually produces results? Chase him up and keep your loss in the forefront of his mind. Ask him if your loss was passed onto CID? ;)

I hope you can get the problem resolved soon?
