Hi People,

I'm normally a poster on the Motorboat forum (dont start throwing stones at me yet! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif ) but thought id share with you that i did my Competent Crew RYA course last week on the South Coast and had a great time.
1 week on a Bavaria 36 with 4 of us doing the Comp. Crew course and 1 other doing his prep week for his 'Coastal Skipper'
Was a great week and i have to say 8kts has never been so much fun. Also got to do a couple of Night sails which was a great experience..

It certainly gives us Motorboaters a greater understanding of the navigational challenges of a sailing boat.

So guys for my next course 'Practical Day Skipper' its gonna be decision time.. Power or Sail...

Cheers,

Nik

If you're experienced mobo why not do the raggie course and learn a bit more?
presumably the practical motor equivalent will be more a rubber stamping your experience, although noone is above learning something on any trip out the raggie might be more testing and rewarding

and might bring you further from the dark side

..your powers are weak old man... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Congratulations on increasing in wisdom /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Seriously, I've often thought that it'd be a good idea for raggies to spend some time on stinkboats and stinkies to spend some time with the sticks and strings.

I was shocked to find how hard it is to manoevre at low speed on a stinkpot - especially in a crosswind and those from the darks side have been shocked at how much sea and traffic can hide behind a genoa, and the effect on a ragtop of even a relatively small wake.

Here Here...

I too was a little caught out by windage on a Mobo when I tried it... and thoroughly confused about twin throttles... well not confused, but it wasn't instinctive for me in the same way that a tiller or wheel would be on a raggie...

So, i'd also vote for more cross 'border' experience....

yip yip
it all goes slidey sideways very quickly and it was not instinctive on how you stop it all going qwrong.
oh and i nearly buried it in the opposite boat when i buried the throttle by accident
bit more power than your av yanmar
some cross pollenation is in order.

I'm with you on this Neil!

Welcome to the converted!!

I have the privilege of being able to do both!

When in the mood, I do enjoy screaming from A to B at over thirty knots. But, I find it hard to beat meandering at 6 to 7 knots!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

It doesn't take long to remember though,

I was doing a delivery for Princess once. I was on a P65, a nicely presented Mobo, I was dead in the water 12 miles south of St Catherine's Point, and from a standing start I went full on! After about, 20 secs I was doing 38 kts! Spinning at 2300 revs, and burning 232 litres of fuel per hour,...................
per engine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Twin V10 MAN's, before I'm asked.

Very exhilarating, but I could do that same trip in another 12 hours-ish, and it would cost me sweet FA in fuel!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nice to have a play, but hey, give me canvas any day!!!!!!!!!!!!

Al.

Thanks for the replies guys.. (and for not having me hung, drawn & quartered! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif )

Well i still enjoy the 30kt blast down the estuary and also the flexibility to dash out quickly and anchor up but there is certainly something very rewarding about sailing.

I think i'll probably do my RYA training based on Sailing since i think alot of the knowledge will cross-over to MOBO but with the added skill on the Sailing front.

Also with Fuel prices being what they are these days, Sailing certainly scores very highly in that department. Especially since my sense of adventure is getting stronger and wanting to explore further afield. It's just too darn expensive on Motors.. (not to mention shorter range)

Anyway, thanks for the welcome and i'll keep you posted how things turn out.

Re: Stinky goes Raggy, harumph

But a bav 36 has an engine as well? So still a mobo, really, a bit, with slightly skintflinty/cheating tendencies, hm? Anyway, if or when the mast comes down, its a mobo again.

Some horrid people round here would make jokes it being a submarine if the keel falls off, but i would never do that.

Re: Stinky goes Raggy, harumph

oo you just cant win some days! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
yep there was a little stink-pot diesel hidden from view but it didn't get used too much.

Infact we managed to Anchor, MOB & various other mooring techniques without a hint of the dirty stuff..

The Bav 36 may not be the most 'classic' of boats but it stood us well over the week.

Don't let mat pollute you with his two hull vision of the world. Some would call them bloody ugly rafts, but I wouldn't do that.
