Both decent boats, I would look at both, with my personal hat on, the Targa 27 seems a bit strong at that price and they both have V8's in them so factor this in, nothing at all wrong with this but they could be more expensive to run depending on your cruising grounds. The plus side is they will purr like kittens at river speeds.

Cant tell form the pix but the Targa looks a little tired inside but again easy to fix.

Go and see both boats to see what you like, headroom will be important and you will have to get used to ducking moving into the forward berth, trust me on that one.....

Usually thing, full survey etc.

Yup its for the Thames and coastal next season when I'm back upto scratch on nav and tides.
They both have V6's i beleive not V8's but I may be wrong
And you're right on price but I have just had a new haggling head fitted!
We're happy with either layout.
I just want to get BACK ON THE WATER!!!:D
Thanks for taking the time to reply

They are V6 (I think...)

View both and take time to look at the finish on both, one will stand out over the other....but I will let you decide which is which

Also not sure on the new canopy as being an "extra" on one, what an earth are they going to do with the canopy and no boat...

My first reaction to the Targa price was "ouch!" it seems overpriced to me. My view of the Falcon price isn't worth a carrot as I don't have a clue.

Personally I wouldn't consider either. Certainly the Targa doesn't lend itself to Thames use although the Falcon is somewhat better. Both suffer the same malaise, they have petrol engines. As has been said so many times before on this Forum "petrol is a pain". Forget safety issues forget all issues. Remember the aggro of just getting petrol, this grief alone would be enough to me off.

For a lot less money you could buy a nice late Freeman with diesel engine(s). You would have style, comfort and a re-saleable boat.

Sorry should have explained myself better - we have decided on a sports cruiser as home base will be Thames but next summer hols we're taking a month off to have a trundle around the south coast at least.
I realise some boats may suit us better in some ways but it's a very lucky fella who can afford his perfect boat!
Thanks again for taking time to reply.

Those boats will be fine on the river, but you need to think about the cost of petrol, just pottering up the river will cost you about £12 per hour, at sea probably £75 per hour. To get to the Solent from the Barrier it will take maybe 12hours if the weathers good, you can do the sums:(
Petrol boating is not easy, once past Shepperton and onto the tideway there is no waterside petrol until Eastbourne then the Solent so you need a really good range. Its actualy cheaper now to move a boat by road than cruise it round, personaly though the hassel of humping jerry cans full of petrol down to the boat every weekend even for a river boat would rule it out for me, got that t-shirt I'm afraid.

Both nice boats though, Targa quality will shine through when you view, the Falcon 27's are a bit caravan'ish I seem to remember.

Just to correct that. You can get petrol up the Medway at Gillingham, at Ramsgate and at Dover. Then of course Eastbourne, Brighton and almost everywhere in the Solent. Still be expensive though :(

Are you sure? Ramsgate and Dover were both diesel only last time I was there, i'm sure they have never done petrol.

Ahh... just checked and yes Ramsgate does do petrol, appologises

I had no issues with my Petrol, boats, but wouldn't be keen on going back to one.

Buy the boat for the predominant use, as most River vessels will handle coastal work OK once in a while, whilst being wholly superior for river use and sleeping in!

Think resale too.... ;)

Many thanks all for the replies and pm's.
Lots of very good advice and wise words.
It's all going to come to a head this weekend - we've seen enough boats to make a decision.
For various reasons I'm probably over thinking the whole thing trying not to make a cock-up.
So the time has come to stop faffing about, say f**K it and get on with buying a boat !!
When all's said and done so long as its a good boat whatever we get is going to be 100% closer to being on the water than sat here on the sofa typing:D
Thanks again for putting up with a newbies ramblings.
Hope it stays nice for any of you out this weekend you luck lucky gits !!
Cheers

There is a very good reason why petrol boats always appear to be in such good condition for their age.People simply do not use them after the first flush of owner ship passes.
Both those boats are OK on the Thames at a pinch, but suspect that the comments on an earlier thread about many boats being all over the shop due to wind will feature light weight sterndrive boats. Once you get it round to the coast then your pocket really will feel the pinch.Lets say you use 15 gallons an hour(no point in 5 knots down there you are never going to get any where) so a couple of hours out and back..... 30 gallons at £1.40 a litre (marina price) £189.00 quids.argh.

Morning again all,
I have had a fair number of replies suggesting a "river vessel" can I ask for some examples to research ?
Budget under £20k and 30ftish tops (not happy with anything bigger yet).
Dayboat for 6 and weekender for 4, me, Swmbo and the grandkids
And yes we are guilty of the crime it has to "look right" too.
I'm truly greatful for all the replies positive or negative.
Thanks again

Freeman, Seamaster to start with.

Maybe aged and not shaped like an Arrow, but they have DECKS, DIESEL engine probably and will be able to be steered easily.

Sounds Like

A nice Birchwood 25 to me, ideal first boat, can sleep 4 comfortably and six with two sleeping in cockpit on the large convertable double

Not that I am biased at all

Broom 30 would be good with the Grandkids (separate cabin!) but would cost more.
Project 31/ Princess 32 ok slightly over 30 ft but better accomodation.

(Must be over 50 to buy the Broom though... cue No Regrets for his words of wisdom!).

Bugger !!!! I'm 45 so what to get for 5 yrs till I'm old enough ?
The Princess does appeal most from options so far.

Seamaster 30: may be over budget but its towards the end of the summer, you may get lucky on an offer and there are cheaper ones. They are "big" boats and very viable for 12 on a dayboat basis and six overnight (more if they rough it in the cockpit). Being 11' beam they are as much to licence as a 32' Princess with a narrower hull.
Seamaster 8m, 27 foot version with slightly sharper lines. Not many about.
B25 has a lot going for it, I think they are very attractive boats.

I know this boat well, have accompanied her to Rochester, Ramsgate and Burnham as well as numerous non tidal trips. Owner is looking to move up to a big sailing yacht. We have had 12 on board numerous times for day runs (any more and we take my boat too).

and cheaper, but what is "a little TLC"?...

as you may have guessed, I like the big Seamasters:-)
