Gear selection on the boat is relatively easy, maybe a little still but not excessive, when the drive is fully trimmed down but when it's trimmed up more then just a little bit it becomes very stiff and trimmed any real amount it's near impossible to move.. No way it could be used in a "beach mode" because I wouldn't be able to get it into and out of gear for fear of breaking the cable..

Is a significant stiffness normal on a trimmed drive?

Is there a routing for the cable that is critical to it working when trimmed?

thanks

It'll be the shift cable; change it for a Teleflex TFXtreme one; I have had two DPS drives ( same upper unit/ shift mechanism as you have)you'll be amazed at the difference a switch to that cable makes.

Guess its something that will have to wait till she comes out for maintenance at the end of the year then.. :)

It's an easy job and there is no chance of water ingress so in theory it could be done whilst the boat is in the water; however, there are some vital small bits connecting the inner cable to the shift lever on the outdrive and sod's law dictates they would be dropped and disappear into the water. I wouldn't do it !

I tried to find some photos of the inside of the transom showing the cable and it's connectors and routing but couldn't find anything that was clear.. Might try and crawl/squeeze/slide back there over the weekend and see if I can have a good look..

The cable goes into a rubber hose ( with a tubular insert on it's end ) on the starboard side of the transom. The outer cable is attached to the tilt housing with a bracket that can be slid clear once the bolt is loosened ( no need to remove it completely).

This is what cheap umbrellas are made for, which is a good thing as they're sod all use for keeping you dry; tie to a piece of rope and dangle it in the water underneath the outdrive and drop things to your heart's content.
