Stiff throttle normal?

Am I correct in assuming that when doing small transitions between forward and reverse when docking, one should be swearing continuously while fighting with a stiff throttle that refuses to go into gear without "clunking"?

If that's not the case, then clearly I need a new throttle...what do you think of this one for a 2000 Sea Ray 245?

How smooth should I expect my throttle to be?

I suspect you just answered your own question.

Now oil your cables before they start snapping :encouragement:

Lubricate the ends only or you are likely to damage the conduit linings
I would suggest that you disconnect the cables from the engine and see how the control feels
I believe that a certain amount of clunking is normal ( compare with other engines) but best to try engaging at the engine by hand if possible
Replacing controls is not unknown but not that normal usually they respond to fettling
Outboard controls used to slightly increase revs with engagement as I recall

For the relatively low cost for a couple of Cables, I recommend you consider buying new cables and greasing the shift lever mechanism
