I am endeavouring to remove a number of stickers from my cockpit but am having difficulty in removing the adhesive.I have heard that heating with a hair dryer might help.Any other thoughts as to best means of removal?

Hairdryer or hot air gun will bring them off a treat without damaging the surface. Just don't get too carried away or they will burn on and then you WILL have probs!

Removal any other way may leave a residue of glue, which can be removed (usually) with meths. Acetone does a better job, but will also attack the GRP gelcoat unless used with care.

I found the hairdrier good in warming up the glue but you need a solvent. You could try white spirit as that seems to work for a lot of glues. When I was cleaning the transom and removed some stickers I found the gel coat needed polishing to remove the marks (?caused by sunlight on the plastic). This works best with 3M finishing compound or similar rubbed on with a soft cloth.

Old tricks >>>>>

Old adhesive from stickers / candle wax dropped on carpet etc......

Couple layers of absorbent kitchen roll, max-heat iron.

Place paper in two layers over offending gunge. Now iron well melting the gunge into the paper roll ..... lift away while hot. Repeat if necessary.

Second ..... stick another GOOD sticker over the offending gunge and then iron that / or heat with hot air gun .,..... lift away carefully while still hot .... best way is to pull across itself as close as possible .....

Acetic acid is the key to removing sticky gunge type stuff, or in its common form Lemon juice. You can by specially made label remover from places like RS components or Maplin Electrionics. Many stationary suppliers may have it to. It smells like oranges so you get a nice smelling cabin too. Oh and it hurts like buggery if you get it in the eye or a cut!!!!!!!!!

to remove glue residue use wd40 or margarine

Douse the glue with one of them and leave it to soak for a while. Should come off thereafter.

We used to use margarine to remove tree resin from birds/bats. works a treat.

Wayne -- How come you were removing tree resin from birds and bats? Sounds intriguing. I'd love to know more.

Natural turpentine and meths are produced from organic oils. White spirit, petrol etc. are produced from inorganic oils, which is why some glues, paints etc. are removed with one or the other.

I found out quite by chance when cleaning a paint brush last year. Wondering why one worked and the other didn't I did a search on the net.

Wonderful for instant research.

It's a bit like this......

During a particularly hot spring in South Africa the resin from the Blue gum tree's near to where we lived got so hot that it became runny.

Just about every day for a couple of weeks we ended up finding birds and bats on the ground with gum all over them.

My father knew that Q20 or 1To99 (SA equiv of WD40) removed it so a quick bit of research found that margarine had some common components. Somewhat less damaging to feathers et al.

There you have that bit of trivia.

Cheers

Wayne

Better than a hair-dryer

is an electric hot-air gun as used for paint softening.

Used with care it removes the transfer with all its adhesive.

If you've aready removed the surface plastic you've got a different scale of problem with which I doubt anyone can help - try xylol as a solvent.
