Hi there. I am trying to remove some stripes from the coachroof of my benny 351. I am familiar with the technique of using a hairdryer and then pulling away but in this case the stripe is so thin that it just shrivels and tiny bits come away at a time. Bearing in mind the remaining glue is usually easily removed with acetone I tried to douse a rag with a copious quantity of acetone in the vain hope that it would smear the thin sticker off but in the event all it did was wipe the colour all over the boat!!!!!

Anyone have any smart ideas on this one at all please?

Hi
I had great success on my Beneteau using a small home steamer. Just lifted a corner and with the steam being played just ahead of the stuck down part it just pealed of. The steamer was one of those sold to clean kitchen surfaces and chairs etc. Never worked for them but was great on the yacht !!!

If you can get at the edge with a stanley knife blade then (carefully!) you can scrape the edge of the sticker without scratching the gelcoat - once you have lifted some of it the rest may pull off. If it doesn't pull off and breaks the glue is too hard and you need to use a hairdryer. If your hairdryer melts the plastic you have it too hot or have left it there too long, it only needs to warm the sticker to melt the glue a little.

We used this technique to get sponsors stickers off dinghies - spent hours polishing them afterwards to get the surface back to a nice shine!

Ah ok guys - both good suggestions thanx. Don't have access to a steamer and as I say I tried the hairdryer but had it on the high setting so will have a go on the first setting and report back. Failing that it will be source a steamer!

Cheers.
