Hi Folks... still plodding on when time allows to get the stubborn U Joints out and after dropping #1 son off at uni today, I'll be buying an impact wrench and heavy duty C Press that's made for the job... should do it and I can use the tools for other stuff no doubt.

That said, I've spotted this on Ebay and wondered if it's compatible with my top section of the Sterndrive.. would make for a quick and easy swap out without the hassle of replacing the U Joints on the existing unit.

My Yoke has C stamped on it which I believe indicates it's a 1.62 gear ratio and my sterndrive serial number appears to be compatible (OM471131)

What's the thoughts of those that know their sterndrives please, worth a punt or give it a wide berth?

many thanks Gary

Gary,

Don't you think you might be taking a bit of a punt on that? any guarantee that the uj is not as bad as yours was?
Maybe best to carry on with your refurb=peace of mind!

Rob.

+1 at the very least you know you have done the job right, rather than take a
chance with a used unknown history item good luck keep smiling all part of the fun of boating.
(better be quick the way this rains coming down at the moment we could be living aboard soon:D:D:D:D:D:D)

hi g, ...... glad progress is forward...you could look at this in 2ways,.... 1, just buy it and put it in the shed to "play with" later, as your not sure if its compatable, if its not, just "out it" as it is with no great loss..... or..... 2, continue with your original and USE, and if this one is the same, then refurb as a "spare"!!....you might have the prob i had and hit something in the water, unbolt old bolt on spare!!........at the end of the day "ya pays yer money n takes your choice!!!!!..... for a "ton", it might be a season saver.....regards steve.....ps. a least you aint missed nothing in the weather deptment !!!!!!!!!

I've sometimes thought of getting a spare drive unit, refurbishing it as a winter project and keeping it in the garage as a spare, so that if anything goes wrong in the summer they can just be swapped over so you don't miss any boating.

The one in the ebay listing looks like the right one, but I would ask the seller to confirm it is the right ratio and the UJs etc are all in good working order. A bit of a bargain price though if it is fully working, but I would think you would be lucky if it will just bolt on your lower unit and go without any further maintenance.

Gear ratio is usually stamped somewhere on the upper port side of the upper gearcase close to the input shaft bearing above the "flare". The C means it is either Contra or clockwise rotation, can't remember which.

The gear ratio should be matched to the engine anway, so a 5 litre engine is a 1.61:

Mercruiser Alpha 1 Gen 2 (1991 & Newer)
Engine HP Liters/CID Cylinders Gear Ratio Tooth Count Year
3 Liter 130 3.0/181 4 2.0 24-24 1998-2005
3 Liter 130 3.0/181 4 1.94 20-24 1991-2005
4.3 Liter 175 4.3/262 6 1.81 17-19 1991-2005
5.0 Liter 230 5.0/305 8 1.61 24-24 1991-2005
5.7 Liter 260 5.7/350 8 1.47 20-22 1991-2005

thanks.. mine's 1.62 going by a lookup table I've found.. the C on the Yoke is the reference in the table.. might buy it just to strip down and learn how to maintain the thing
