I need to replace the rubber hose between the stern gland and the stern tube on my Kelt 850. My quesion is do I need a special hose or would a section of exhaust hose do the job?
Hi Tarka1, I don't think most exhaust tube will work, primarily as this is usually reinforced with wire that would prevent you tightening a clamp/jubilee clip hard enough. What you need is large fabric reinforced rubber heater-type hose that is flexible enough to clamp securely. Can't remember where I bought mine, bt someone on here will advise.
The shaft log hose is a special quality pipe which if I remember correctly is neoprene on the inside so that it is not affected by grease from the seal and is reinforced.
I cannot find the manufacturers but I purchased mine from
Ask for Steve Brecken and he will get you the correct product. It’s very expensive approx £7.50 per inch but the boat sinks without it /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif It should last 15 years if its looked after so get the correct product.
Exhaust hose is not a suitable product although used extensively for this job.
Be safe.
