I'm sure there was a thread here a while backon my type of stern gland, but I can't find it.

My stern gland is the type that has an oil bottle above it, feeding oil by gravity. The "works" seem to be in a brass (bronze?) sleeve.Any hints on the correct oil to use, how fast it should get used and what maintenence jobs need to be done etc would be gratefully received.

This sounds like the same type as mine which came from T Norris at Isleworth.

It has a bronze sleeve about 5-6 inches long which contains 3 oils seals; two at the outboard end and one at the inboard end. There is a clear plastic tube from the top of the sleeve which is connected to an oil reservoir mounted above the waterline.

Mine is filled with the recommended SAE 90 gear oil. As far as I can remember there isn't any maintenance required. It's never leaked and doesn't use any oil so I've never needed to top it up in the 6 years since I fiited it.

I used to have a Selcruiser with one of these and it had the oil bottle too when I started.

I used plain engine oil 10W40 or 15W40.

Eventually I got sick of the oil spots in the water when I was moored up (presumably where it leaked through pin prick holes) so I fitted a Brass remote greaser (about £30 from most chandlers) to the same hole that the plastic pipe goes into and changed over to grease.

This worked a treat for several years until I sold it.

regards

Mike

Hi,

I have designed a similar system for my boat. Researching the oil, Mobil makes a stern tube oil which emulsifies in case water ingresses. This emulsified oil does not suppose to loose is lubricating and anti-corrosive properties.

I cant think of the name anbar or similar (the wife knows) and costs here N$400,- for 20 liter which is about GBP33,-

I would recommend this oil, but my question is how does brass/bronze stand up to it. Knowing that diesel dissolves copper for instance.

Wife came in and cant remember the name either, ask Mobil Marine for stern tube oil.

regards ongolo

I have a similar oil feed shaft seal which was supplied by Ambassador Marine ( makers of the rope "Stripper") Mine is lubricated by red Hydraulic gear oil but a colleague had one fitted which uses ordinary engine oil same make of seal.
Had mine fited about 7 years ago , never leaks, but I changed the interior bearing seals last year. Very rarely have to top up the oil reservoir.
