Hi,
This is the stern gland on my Gibsea 312, how do I service it and should I replace the hose as I am not sure how old it is. I have owned the boat for 2 years now, she is out of the water at the moment any advice please.

Hi Simon

First of all stern tube rubber is NOT ordinary rubber tubing, it usually is thicker walled, my own for example on a 1" dia shaft has a 3/8" thick wall.
It's not cheap, so measure the length and i/d, I got mine form http://www.tnorrismarine.co.uk/

The stern gland is one of the boats most if not the important fittings, if it burst at sea you sure have a major problem !!

To fit it you will have to undo the shaft from the gearbox, and slide the shaft back enough to remove the old one, if your have a conventional stuffing box then you may as well re pack that as well at the same time.
Hope this helps

Looks in pretty good shape in the photo. You adjust it by tightening the two nuts until the shaft still turns and you get a little drip when running. The instructions on repacking if necessary are on Vyv's site referred to above. Hoses rarely need replacing as they do little except keep the water out and allow a bit of movement when the engine is running. Visual check for splits and cracks - and if does need replacing the correct hose is freely available from marine engineers or on line suppliers such a ASAP.

Never seen such a long hose and not seen one with 3 hose clips each end. The 3rd clip from the gland looks like it's not clamping onto anything and actually biting into the hose. I'd have a look and if it's not doing anything remove it. Also the 3rd one from the stern tube may be the same.
With the hose being so long you might find a bit of a twisting action on it when in gear. I'd think about shortening it.
