What is acceptable operating temperature for a stuffing box?
Mine is traditional type but with PTFE lubricated packing, 4 rings instead of 3 used in older types. It does not have greaser, supplier considered it unnecessary. Adjustment is as loose as possible but practicallly no leakage occurs. At cruising speed bronze part feels quite hot, uncomfortable but not too hot to touch.
Any comments?

I have the same problem - have you taken the brass nut off the fitting closest to the stern tube ? Its possible to get air trapped causing the packing to run dry.
I've fitted a 1/4" grease nipple and tried pumping it full of grease - but it still runs hot. Interested in anyother comments.
