Hello every body.
On my newly re-fitted steel boat, I fitted one of these nylon stern glands with a bit of rubber hose to connect it with the stern tube(this on a reputed south coast marine engineer's advice) until one day, I started the engin (only 15 hours run !), put into gear and realised (thank god) very quickly that the gland was turning with the shaft!
On the next low tide I removed it and brought it to the same engineer who was very surprised and advised me that maybe it would be a good idea to fit a bronze version of the same thing and the one he showed me had a grease thingy of which you give a quarter of a turn every so often to lubricate the two inch or so long bearing.
As he did not have the proper size in stock he said he would have to order one then calls me later to tell me it would be weeks to get one of them but could get one quicker of an other make with the difference that this one has a shorter bearing and is not lubricated.
Now, obviously he is going to tell me that it is just as good and so would the manufacturer, so I am asking for some opinion backed with experience on these bearings and their qualities and faults.
Thanking you in advance,
Maurice.
