Hi there how often do you turn your stern gland greaser. i turn mine every time i use my engine . would you turn it as often when your not useing you boat and its sitting in the water or just when you use the engine thanks guys

Our MD17C required stern gland greasing every two hours. The manual should say often it should be done, if not call the manufacturer, definitely don't guess or get it wrong.

>Too much grease can cause bearings to over heat, so use sparingly.

The stern gland dripping keeps the bearing cool. Also you can't over grease because you come to a grinding halt when the shaft area greased is full.

My bearing doesnt drpi or get hot.
tell me hoe a drip now & then cools a bearing or shaht.
in our waters the water temp will cool the shaft more than a drip

True, the water lubricates and cools, but bearings will fail due to over heating when waterways are blocked with grease, grease is a poor conductor of heat.

I suggest it depends entirely on the design of your stern tube and gland. If it is a closed tube with a bearing at each end it is normal to fill the tube with grease, in which case it needs topping up occasionally. If the stern tube is open at the bottom, so water filled, the reality is that greasing does almost nothing for it. The grease simply floats on the column of water and, if you are lucky, it may find its way between the packing and the shaft.

The stuffing box uses waxed flax with lubricants, the bolts are tightened until it drips once minute, perhaps you have a different set up if it doesn't drip.

The top bearing is close to the engine not under water so I don't see how sea water can cool the bearing. The shaft under water will be water temperature but it gets warmer to very warm near the engine.
