As one who comes late to this big boat stuff, please advise? Midnight Drifter has a remote (ie, at the end of a tube) gland greaser. What sort of grease do I fill it with?
RAMONOL is the grease which has come onto the market to replace the popular but discontinued Duckhams Keenol.
"A high quality water resistant grease with good adhesion, good wear resistance and a wide temperature operating range. A universal grease for use on everything from stern glands to winches"
Google for it or look out for it in your favourite swindlers.

Dig into your pocket and fit a water-lubricated seal. It's a new life!

I currently have a Volvo Blackjack seal and it's been fine for 4 years so far but I wouldn't so lightly dismiss the conventional stern tube grease-lubricated seal. I had one on my previous boat and found that it worked very well. If it's set up with good packing and is correctly adjusted [ie. not too tight] it's little trouble and can't go disastrously wrong.
Thanks, all. Ramanol it is - I won't be splashing out on a new system this year (the learning curve is steep enough so far, and so is the cost!) /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I agree with you, I inherited a water cooled seal with the boat, not been any bother, but would not have gone that way myself, as you say a trad stuffing box is easily 'fixable'.
