Sterling Power Alternator Regulator

I'm trying to do some research but can't decide whats best:

A Sterling Power Advanced Digital Alternator Regulator

or

A Sterling Power Alternator to Battery Charger

There is a huge leap in price and don't fully understand what I'm paying more money for with the second option. Any help would be great!

Why do you feel you need either? What's wrong with letting the alternator charge the batteries as it was designed to?

As its trickling a few amps out and not really doing its job very well. Alternators are very lazy and not very smart. I know my father has the advanced digital alternator regulator and it pumps out some serious amps and distributes it nicely across the domestic and starters. However, I don't know what I would be getting with the extra money with the alt to battery charger.
