Sterilising tablets v water purification tablets

Are they the same thing as I bought some sterilising tablets to drop in to the water tank on the boat to save removing it for cleaning,but all it says on the box is about cleaning babies bottles with it,nothing about putting tablets in to tanks of drinking water.If they are the same how many tablets would I put in a 10 gallon tank.

I think there is a difference - sterilising stuff sterilises and then gets rinsed off......i don't think you drink it........i sterilise my caravan system with a steriliser and then rinse it through - the boat water supply seems to stay fresh with no taste without any attention although the water tank is inboard and there is no sunlight on it

I use Milton solution for keeping my water tank "sweet".

The recommended dose for treating drinking water is 2·5ml per 5 litres

If you look at the Milton website you will see that they recommend, in the camping and caravanning section on the hygiene tab, a dose rate of 15ml per gallon (call that 5 litres) for sterilising water tanks, then draining and flushing after 30 minutes.

By comparison they recommend 30ml per 5 litres for sterilising babies' bottles.
30ml being equivalent to 1 tablet.

I'd suggest 15ml per 5 litres for a tank that is not badly contaminated, double that if it is.

If "Skinflint" is your middle name a less expensive option is to use one of the cheaper non- thickened domestic bleaches. They are more concentrated so you will have to work out the dose rate to use. They may also contain additives and impurities you would not want to drink so more thorough rinsing would be advisable after cleaning.

The answer to your question, if the tablets are Milton or an equivalent, is to use at between half of or the same rate as recommended for babies' bottles. So 5 to 10 tablets in a 10 gallon tank

I dose my tank with sterilizing fluid at the start of the season (Milton or a cheaper equivalent), pump it all out and fill with fresh. I put some Aquapura in now and again when I remember. The best way of getting nice tasting water is a filter.

Thanks for the replies,The problem seems to be the in the pipe from the tank to the tap as when I pump some water through the bad taste dissapears.I will take the pipe off and give it a good clean.Ive had the boat for years but the problem only started last year.

When you put sterilizing fluid in the tank you need to run the tap so the pipes fill with it too.
