hello all,

since I'm dismantling basically everything and I have good access to all wiring ducts, I thought I better replace speaker cables (they are rather thin for my liking). Further, I'm worning longish hours in the rebuilt and since yesterday that I removed another side panel with the last speaker on it I'm musicless and I don't like it...

Now, problem is that I'm thinking I'd like:

  • a set of speakers in the salon (nice 12cm speakers in side panels currently that I will replace, but size may stay, if not go for 16cm - 6in dual cone most likely) Simple car speakers as they are inside, right?
  • a set of speakers on the ceiling of the aft deck (got 50mm clearence, so reasonably easy to fit marine speakers again 6in I guess)
  • a set of speakers on the f/b and since MiToS is rather old school and hasn't got a nice wide grp arch, I'll probably fit them on the dash slanted panel at around 500mm from the floor-rather low and sort of facing the sky...

Now, HOW do I dim/control sound on THREE sets of speakers???
All car stereos I know have two sets, am I missing something or should I join say salon and aft deck in one set and dim them against the f/b ones?

any ideas plz?
And I mean reasonable things, not multi thou setups, I just don't care!
Kids are going to have their mp3s and phones so it's us wanting to listen to something and relax. Obviously not interested in subs, massive amps, active x-overs or anything like it, been there, done that.
Head unit should be radio cd with usb (I guess)

cheers

Fusion marine stereos are inexpensive, and have multi-zone control out of the box. The head units will control four zones, and you can amp two of them from the head unit; you'll need an ext amp for the other two zones. Fusion do one for that purpose.

Front output of car hifi to saloon.
Rear output to changeover switch, to switch between cabin and deck.

So silencing the deck is the click of a switch, not a delve into a menu.

the new one you can control from you iThingy looks good. More expensive than a changeover switch though.

The new 700 is not particularly cheap - but if you don't want to scrabble for your iTouchMyself or whatever every time you want to turn the volume down, then the older cheaper models in both the 500 and 600 series have the multi-zone features. I've got the 500 on my boat, and use the multi-zone feature, and it's excellent.

thanks jimmy,

cannot seem to find a 500cd new, and 600s are in the 300gbp region in ebay. Adding three sets of speakers and a stereo amp we are up to 700euro+ (or 3% of the value of MiToS, for that sort of money I'd try to up it a bit and use the money for a bowtruster :p )

Rethinking the whole lot to maybe using the two outside sets (aft deck and f/b) in one line and the salon in the other...

Not an i-whatever man so the extra i-features are meaningless.

Also it annoys me that most marine headunits are bleeding white and I just want to put it in a nice all black helm  over my all black vimar switching and next to the all lightgreen vintage VHF by sailor, aesthetics...

It's temptng to just buy a car stereo with A2DP bluetooth support to be able to wirelessly stream stuff off my mobile (and a front facing USB for good measure...). Extra rca input means I could connect another source and cover all possible needs.

oh well, decisions, decisions

I love them! ;)

thanks for the idea, more like a trim to balance output to the two remaining set of speakers though as I'm not thinking of shutting completely one of the three sets, just balancing outputs a bit.
Problem is that in order to do that properly, I need a trim pot on stereo line out signal (preamp level 5Vmax)leading to a 4channel amp and then to the speakers. Not simple, not cheap, wife will have yet another thing to hate me, not worth it tbh.
