You could get a dc to dc converter, for the power you require it would probably be about £30

Yes that is an option, I was thinking of a dc to dc converter, rather than a dc to ac inverter. Like those <A target="_blank" HREF=http://rswww.com/cgi-bin/bv/browse/Campaign.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1424941666.1075917607@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccfadckikjemiicfngcfkmdgkldfhn.0&cacheID=ukie&Name=new&stockNo=4528596> here </A> except I am sure that I have seen 12 to 17 volt somewhere.

I have normally used a 12v DC to 230v AC Inverter to power my laptop onboard. (Presently £14.99 Maplins).
Recently as back up I purchased a DC to DC regulated Power adaptor INPUT DC 11-14volts OUTPUT Stepup 15 to 20 V , 70Watts max - Purchased on E-Bay direct from the US 14dollars inc. postage.
Hope this helps.

Cheaper by far than manufacturers adapters.

Other way of course, is to buy two 6v lawnmower batteries and add them to your domestics, that way you can tap off 18v (ish) of clean DC. I think I am going to go this way so I can use my SSB to dowload weather fax. Using any small DC-DC adapter causes a fair amount of noise (elecrical).

...That's how Dell do the business on you... Cheapish machine up front, proprietary components for which they charge an arm and a leg.
