An actor who was the voice of Uncle Mort on a series of radio comedies plus lots of other stuff. Probably only recognised by a few but wanted to acknowledge his passing as I named my wind vane steering after him. It's a Hebridean which nods from side to side and says, "Aye lad, aye lad".
Enough of a boaty connection for me.

Didn't know his name but a memorable performance in Uncle Mort's Celtic Fringe..'the blood red Beatle' is a Peter Tinniswood phrase that sticks in the memory, along with with Mort's penchant for beer. RIP.

I vaguely remember the TV series from the 70s - but I think Robin Bailey played Uncle Mort in that - he sadly dies in 1999. It inspired me to read the books.
One quote from the series that always makes me smile isn't Uncle Mort but Mr Brandon who says 'I bought her an electric drill for Christmas and by Easter she hadn't taken it out of the box'

I first encountered Uncle Mort on Radio 4. I listened to the episode where Carter Brandon takes Uncle Mort for a drive to a country pub where the landlord's mother-in-law is dying upstairs ("Have you called an ambulance?" "No, the neighbours would think we were showing off."). At the time I was driving my Triumph Herald up Arkengarthdale to Tan Hill pub, so it was remarkable appropriate. Or perhaps the term is "typical".
