Has anyone had any practical experience with a step drive? This unit, as shown at the boat show, is bolted on to the outdrive (Penta AD31/41DP) and is proported to give 25% better acceleration, be 20% quicker on to the plane, and reduce tickover speed by 25%. This should be a cheaper alternative to replacing underpower engines, and due to the 'gearbox' effect will reduce the load on the powerplant. This should also prevent overfuelling which is usually accompanied by a huge bank of black smoke that is produced by the underpowering of some diesel craft. Therefore, if used with a larger prop, should also give a few extra knots in boat speed.
