The user manual for my Sleipner hydraulic steering system invites me to check the [hydraulic] oil level in the helm pump. Is this merely a question of removing the cap on the upper side of the pump and filling the pump unit to the top? I see no indications of a "full" mark and have no wish to overfill the system. Advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
 
there may be a dipstick attached to the underside of the cap.

Otherwise, top it up and wiggle the wheel a bit.
 
remove the cap, and top up, then leaving the cap off turn the helm lock to lock a few times to expell air. If it feels notchy keep "helming" till it feels smooth. Have towel or similar under the pump to catch any spillage. (THERE WILL BE SOME)
 
If the hydraulic pipes pass through the engine bay then when the engine is running the heat will cause the fluid to expand and seep out of that fitting if you filled it to the top. I have the drip marks on our wheelhouse floor to prove it :o
 
When you look in the filling hole you will see some metal parts about an inch down, fill until this is just covered so you have room for expansion.
 
Generic hydraulic oil can be bought cheaply from any motor factor.
Aquire an old washing up liquid bottle and pour oil into it from your main container.
You can then squirt small amounts into steering pump hole with out making mess and keep bottle handy in your locker.:)
